What made you want to start your new career with California Casualty?

Having been in the call center industry for the greater part of the last 10 years, California Casualty has always had a good reputation. When I was looking for my new career, I was looking to work somewhere that had a great culture, that cared about its employees, and I wanted to find something that would enable me to learn a new skill.

I read a bunch of reviews online and everything seemed to match with everything I was looking for. I’ve been here for almost 3 weeks, and I am impressed with the culture and incredibly happy to work here!

CalCas Customer Spotlight: Jennifer H.

CalCas Customer Spotlight: Jennifer H.

At California Casualty we take pride in the accomplishments of our customers. That’s why we’ve created the California Casualty Customer Spotlight, to share your achievements, extraordinary acts, and experiences.

In today’s Customer Spotlight we have Jennifer H. from San Diego, CA., who has been with California Casualty since 2004.

Jennifer was recently a contestant on the popular game show The Price is Right and won! Not only did she win her portion of the show, but she also made it to the very end and won the Showcase Showdown! Out of all of the prizes that she won, her favorite was her 2021 Jet Black Chevrolet Camaro 1LT. To protect her brand new ride, one of the first things she did was contact California Casualty to get it added to her Auto Insurance policy.

We had the opportunity to sit down virtually with, Jennifer, and ask her a few questions about herself and her experience on the show. Here’s what she had to say.

What is your profession?

I recently retired from the San Diego Unified School District in the Transportation Department. I started out as a school bus driver. Over time, I worked my way up to becoming a Supervisor. I retired as a Transportation Service Supervisor, (TSS).

How did you hear about California Casualty?

It was through my union, Administration Association San Diego City Schools (AASD), that I was first introduced to California Casualty.

Now for the fun stuff… Tell us about your experience on The Price is Right!

How long have you been watching the show?

I have been watching The Price is Right for at least 40+ years. Ever since I visited CBS Studios for the first time in 1977.

Were you nervous?

My experience on the show was so fun! I was very giddy with excitement, but I was nervous during the big spin… Despite my nerves, I was confident that it was my time to shine, after witnessing my daughter (who was on the show the year before).

What is your favorite part about your new car?

My favorite part about my new car is that it’s a manual shift, which means none of my grandkids can drive it, so I do not have to say “No” to them. (Ha!)

Besides the Camaro, what else did you win?

I won a Smart Home Office (L) (P) Desk, Chair, Filing Cabinet, Flow Board, Laptop Computer, Ladies Designer Shoes (Burberry) 5 pairs, ATV (Kymco) Mongoose 270 Euro, Cash, and a 5-night Parasailing Adventure trip for two to Virginia Beach.

Congratulations, Jennifer! We are so happy for you (and definitely a little jealous!). Thank you for participating in our Customer Spotlight and for being a valued member of the CalCas family of policyholders.

Want to relive Jennifer winning big? You can watch her episode of The Price is Right here.

What made you want to work as a Field Marketing Manager for California Casualty?

To get the Field Marketing Manager position for Missouri I went through four interviews, each time I was able to get a better understanding of the California Casualty culture. I quickly came to the conclusion that the company offered more than insurance. This was a place where each employee I encountered cared about my well-being and about those they served. It felt like a perfect fit for me!

What is your favorite part about your job?

I just recently moved into a new role that has expanded my responsibilities as an account manager into states that are new to me. I’m excited to better understand the groups in those states and get to know the leadership.

I’m also working on projects that afford me the opportunity to work with more people within the Partner Relationships department, and with people from other departments within the company. We have so many amazing people working for our company, I’m excited to be in a position to get to know and learn from more of them!

I love my job for a number of reasons: my co-workers, the family feel of our company, the groups we serve – our American Heroes, the friends I have made because of this job, working from home and traveling across the country (during non-covid times).

What have you learned in your position at California Casualty?

I’m not sure there’s enough space for me to list all the useful information I’ve learned during my tenure!

Probably the most useful information I have learned is to never stop looking for opportunities to learn and grow and to create learning opportunities for those around me.

What are your favorite activities to do outside of the office?

My favorite activities are reading, gardening, hiking with my daughter, camping, and traveling with my family.

Anything else you would like the audience to know about you?

My husband and I met when we were 18 and 16 respectively; we became good friends and remained that way for 7 years before we realized that we were meant for each other. We’ve now been married for 17 years and have two kids; Calvin, who will be 14 at the end of the year, and Hazel who will be 12 in May.

Both our Moms live within one mile of us, and spend a lot of time with us hanging out at home and traveling.

We have a very loving and needy eleven-year-old German Shepard named Lily, who pretends to fiercely protect us, but is a big baby at her core.

Employee Spotlight: Charlene Rowens

We have amazing employees at California Casualty. The Employee Spotlight is a new series aiming to highlight those talented individuals that make up our successful company culture and community. From human resource recruiters and learning and development trainers to claims adjusters, marketers, customer support specialists, partner relations, sales representatives, and beyond; each week, we’ll highlight a new team member, so you can get to know us better and see how our employees make us who we are as a company.

This edition of the Employee Spotlight will feature Senior Field Marketing Manager, Charlene Rowens.

Charlene has been with us for almost 8 years (her anniversary is next week!) and works remotely for our Partner Relations team.

Let’s get to know Charlene!

Field Marketing Manager

What made you want to work as a Field Marketing Manager for California Casualty?

I have an insurance career background, so for me, it was like coming home.

I was also impressed that CalCas worked with American Heroes: educators, law enforcement, firefighters, and nurses. That definitely appealed to me so I applied right away.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I love helping American Heroes save money and use exclusive benefits that are solely for them (auto and home insurance).  Our groups work so hard every day to educate our future, keep us safe and healthy, they deserve to be treated special.

I also like that no day is the same. Before Covid, I was somewhere different every day. I could be working in a teacher’s lounge, police briefing, fire station, or a conference. My territory includes Riverside, Pomona, Corona, Norco, San Bernardino, and the high desert as far as Bartow.  So, I am usually a road warrior, but that’s fine by me. I love to network and talk about California Casualty Benefits. We really take care of our policyholders.

What have you learned in your position at California Casualty?

Time management; to make sure I give our affinity groups equal attention because it is part of their member benefits and I want to give all an opportunity to use their member benefits.

What are your favorite activities to do outside of the office?

I enjoy the beach, walking, traveling, reading self-help books, and enjoying time with my family!

Anything else you would like the audience to know about you?

I am from the same place as Michael Jackson, Denise Williams, Ernest Lee Thomas, Fred Williamson, Glenn Robinson, Frank Borman, and others I may be forgetting. That city is Gary, Indiana!

I married my college sweetheart!  We just celebrated our Silver anniversary and have known each other for 30 years. I have a son 22-years-old just graduated from DePaul University, a double major in Finance and Economics, and a son Senior in high school.

17. Virtual Scrapbook – Send friends or family a reminder of great times together (pre-Covid!) by assembling a virtual scrapbook of favorite memories. The great thing about an online versus paper version is that you can include videos in the mix of photos.

18. Makeup or Beauty Subscription – Someday we’ll have a reason to go out again, but in the meantime, receiving a regular beauty box can give a boost to those on your holiday list.

19. Membership – There’s an association or club for just about every passion, hobby or interest. Birding? Definitely. Fishing? Yep. Quilting, classic cars, sculpture? – there’s a club for that!

20. Professional Membership – Give a loved one a career boost by getting them a membership to a professional association in their field.

No doubt – this holiday season looks different than all the years past. But with some flexibility and creativity, we can still connect and celebrate with our loved ones. And surprise them with the perfect gifts! Happy holidays to all!
