Like many peace officers, Officer David Struss willingly stepped into the face of danger to protect someone he had never met. While off duty, Struss witnessed a man with a 7 inch knife attacking patrons in a parking lot. Officer Struss disarmed the attacker and pinned him to the ground.
After Struss neutralized the attacker, he began assisting the victim. The attacker stabbed two people, one of whome did not recover. Officer Struss attended to the other victim until medical units arrived. If not for Officer Struss’s heroic actions, the attacker likely would have claimed at least one more life, and possible several more.

I’m voting for officer Struss. he is an exceptional caring person while on duty and off duty. He deserves this award for his heroic efforts!
I have known David for over 20 years and his actions DO NOT surprise me, this is the type of Officer he is. Always looking out for the other guy. I am glad to have him as friend and proud of how he handled the situation without hesitation. We need more good Officers like David to keep us ALL safe!
GOD BLESS ALL POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS for their hard work and dedication
Officer Strus is a wonderful police officer. I’m a recently retired administrative assistant with the Nutley Fire Dept. and Dave was always the best in all situations. On a personal note, we had a problem where I had to call the police when my son was about 5 years old and was bit by a dog. He wouldn’t give us much information but when Officer Strus arrived and spoke to him he opened up. The Township of Nutley I know is very proud to have Dave on the force–24/7.
There is no surprise to me that Officer Struss stepped up when he saw something going on. This is how he is, 24/7, looking out for people and trying to help when ever he can. He does a great job serving our Township and I am very happy that he is patrolling our streets. I vote for Officer Struss 110%, just like he gives to our town. Thanks Sir.
Dave is a true hero and the most humble guy ever. We have been friends for 25 years. He is a fine Officer & Family Man
I’ve know Dave since before he put the uniform on. He’s the same guy today as he was back then. Always looking to see how he can help. I’m sure if you asked him about the incident he would say he was just doing his job. It’s much more than that. When confronted with a deadly situation and having the presence of mind to disarm the assailant using non-lethal methods demonstrates professionalism beyond all expectations.
I have worked side by side with for 12 years…I doesn’t surprise me how he acted that day. That is Dave, always on Duty. He represents the best of Law Enforcement and I am proud to be associated with him.
I’m voting for Dave he was my hero that day, I know he hates when I call him that because as he tells it he was doing his job and this was what he was trained for. But I was in the scene when this happened and if Dave isn’t there this suitation could have been so much worse than it was! I’m proud to call you a friend!
